Is Love is Blind?
When the trailer for Love is Blind played on my Netlix screen, I was intrigued. The concept wasn’t new; finding love on TV has been around for over a decade at this point. Flava of Love brought us what we didn’t know we needed including the girl that went number 2 right there for all of us to see on TV! The Bachelor franchise AKA polygamy dating even though y’all are in a tizzy about polygamy stays bamboozling the masses with fewer marriages and an emphasis on fawning over one person and asking to be chosen. Marriage At First Sight upped the ante by having a team put couples together based on psychology, similarities, and religion and have them meet at the altar.
I pressed play and got hooked episode 1 like the rest of the world. The concept of the show is that singles get to date in pods and fall in love from conversations alone since they can’t see what they look like. First, I’ve been a Nick Lachey fan since he got on the scene and his relationship with his brother sealed the deal so having Mr & Mrs. Lachey host is delightful. Second, I fall in love with a soul way before the physical and that’s always based on conversation and connection so this was right up my alley. My love motto has always been love at first conversation because who wants to pull conversation out of anyone? Never me. Easy conversations are where it’s always been at and beautiful conversations set my soul on fire. Third, I was introduced to the beauty and authenticity of Lauren and Cameron and they had me at hello.
Episode one was a beautiful introduction to the show and continuing on to the next episodes was a no brainer. Somewhere around episode 2 and 3 Barnett happened and I started to get weary of the whole thing. The fuzzy feelings I had episode 1 were now side-eye feelings because of course, these people are gonna fall in love since ALL the distractions were taken away from them. Of course, you’re gonna proclaim your love in 3 days when all you can think of love. This started to feel every bit of the experiment it was. Barnett stayed true to the “get as many women to fall for me then decide on one or not” mentally and it was awful to watch play out.
Jessica, Jessica, Jessica. This lady was exhausting! Both of those men needed to leave her alone.
I have feelings about Carlton and Diamond. They were the only black couple and of course, they’re the couple shenanigans had to play out on. This is America and that narrative was sooo original. Sigh. The point of the pods was to speak freely so Carlton not revealing his truth while in the pods was an interesting choice to the woke eye. Hmmmmm.
Proposals happened and other than being elated for Lauren and Cameron, I watched them as the experiment that they were. As expected, life outside the experiment proved to be not all sunshine and roses for some of the couples and we met GiGi’s real self or the self she wanted people to remember so she could get more checks because Ma’am your representative was nothing like this crazy character in the real world. The outbursts were unacceptable and red flag galore.
Jessica was even more exhausting in the real world and couldn’t believe she was someone’s second choice even though she chose to accept a proposal from her second choice. Both of those men needed to leave her alone and she needed to leave her poor dog out of her drinking escapades.
The weddings made me want to add to the rules for life I have for my sons to include DO NOT HAVE ME DRESS UP FOR A FAKE WEDDING IN YOUR LIFETIME.
The first season of a reality show is my favorite because they are mostly untainted. Netflix struck gold with this one because it became a worldwide phenomenon. Season 2 is gonna bring out a lot more Carltons, Barnetts and GiGis on 100 because they want fame and the authenticity of it all will be lost. It will be about ratings unfortunately but such is reality tv.
Was I hooked on the show? Yes.
Did I believe the experiment? No. Taking away looks was not a bad idea but that transition into the real word needs to be looked into more.
Do I believe that lightning struck and love was genuinely found between Lauren and Cameron? Absolutely.
Is love blind? Nah B. Open your eyes, heart, and brain when you fall cause love is serious work and needs your full participation.
